Malawi
Women in Global Health (WGH) Malawi was established in June 2020 when a group of emerging female leaders saw potential in developing a network of women to enhance skills for influential, transformative leadership. The chapter is a safe space for women to build confidence and puts a spotlight on strong female leaders. It is an advocacy group that aims to ensure more women attain positions of power in Malawi’s global health infrastructure.
Malawi Chapter
is working to:
WGH Malawi aims to employ persistent efforts to change the status quo of women in global health through lobbying for policy changes and building strong evidence on the current situation of women in Malawi’s health sector. WGH Malawi also has an emphasis to build the trust of key global health space on gender equality advancement through the intersectionality of SDG 3 (healthy living and well-being), SDG4 (inclusive and equitable quality education) and SDG 5 (gender equality and empowerment). The chapter further focuses to develop and implement communications strategies that stimulates strategic partnerships and growing membership of WGH-Malawi through strong mentorship, advocacy, publications, round-table discussions, and workshops.
Advance gender equality in Malawi’s global health leadership by supporting, connecting, and advocating for more women to hold decision making and leadership roles.
Women are 70% of the health and care workforce but hold only 25% of leadership roles. Around the world, women health workers are shaping health and leading health in their communities but are underpaid, often unpaid, undervalued and unprotected. Global health is weakened by inequity and lack of diversity in leadership. This is what Women in Global Health Malawi and allies are fighting to change. The Women in Global Health Malawi Chapter’s journey is a testament to the power of collective action, resilience, and the unwavering commitment to gender equity in global health leadership. As the chapter grows and progresses, it paves the way for a future where women play an equal and vital role in shaping the health landscape, bringing us closer to realising the vision of sustainable development goals. The story of this chapter exemplifies the transformative potential that lies in the hands of dedicated individuals working together for a more inclusive and equitable world
