We invite you to join an event at the World Health Summit (WHS) 2023 co-hosted by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Women in Global Health, where we will delve into the critical intersections of climate, health, and gender equality.
Event Details:
Why This Event Matters:
In the face of climate change, it is imperative to acknowledge the disproportionate impact on women, girls, and vulnerable populations. Shockingly, out of the 26 million people estimated to have been displaced by climate change, 20 million are women and girls. Moreover, women make up a significant portion of the health workforce, with 70% representation, and played a crucial role as frontline health workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, they often faced unsafe working conditions, including inadequate protective equipment and instances of sexual violence and harassment.
Similarly, women are instrumental in the climate sector. They are frequently the first to respond during climate crises, assessing community needs and contributing to solutions. Additionally, women make up half of the agricultural labor force in low- and middle-income countries, making them central to food security and resilience in the face of climate impacts.
Exploring Crucial Questions:
Our 90-minute in-person side event will provide a platform for policymakers, health and climate leaders, researchers, and frontline workers to delve into these pressing issues. Through a panel discussion and a moderated roundtable, we will explore:
We look forward to your presence at WHS2023 and to collectively advancing the discussion on climate, health, and gender equality.
