Norway
Founded: November 2018
Women in Global Health Norway was initiated by Andrea S Winkler and Ingeborg K Haavardsson upon invitation from WGH Global in 2018 as the second pilot Chapter in the movement. WGH Norway has since developed alongside a fast-growing global movement and has grown from a small group of 15-20 women to well over 300 members.
Our aims
The mission of WGH Norway is to cultivate enabling environments for gender parity, and hence greater progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and better health for all genders. WGH Norway has a distinct emphasis on the interplay of especially SDG 3 (good health), 4 (good education), and 5 (gender equality), while advancing the agenda of diverse, gender-balanced leadership. The overarching aims of WGH Norway include supporting women in global health and mitigating barriers that deter women from leadership roles in global health, nationally and globally.

Our work
WGH Norway is currently supporting WGH Global with the COVID 50/50 campaigns including Operation 50/50: 100 Women and the Five Asks Gender-Responsive Global Health Security. During the 2020 WGH Security Summit, WGH Norway assisted with the facilitation of actionable pledges from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA).
In addition, a COVID-19 Taskforce within the national chapter has been assembled. The objective of the taskforce is to contribute to the WGH Global #COVID5050 efforts, serving as a national hub for COVID-19 and gender equity actions and activities. The contributions of this Taskforce can be viewed here.
WGH Norway has hosted various events, both in person and virtual. All future and past events can be found here, which also include webinar recordings and written reports from some of the prominent events can also be viewed. This includes a written report from the Launch of Women in Global Health Norway and an Oslo hub meeting inspired by and in celebration of the issue on ‘Women in science, medicine and global health’ from The Lancet. In addition, the WGH Norway Secretariat has created a Member Booklet to increase the visibility of women in the Norwegian global health network and beyond, to extend the network opportunities, and to serve as an easy reference for members to be taken into consideration for leadership positions, decision-making bodies, and presentations and talks for events. The Norwegian chapter is also mentoring of WGH Nepal with its establishment of its chapter and more.
