The Heroines of Health Awards were established by Women in Global Health in 2017 as a powerful platform to amplify women’s invaluable work in the health workforce, which often remains under-recognized. Women represent nearly 70% of the health and care workforce and are 90% of frontline health workers. They represent the majority of health workers but are clustered into roles given lower social status and lower pay.
Now, more than ever, we are at a critical juncture for gender equality, and by raising the visibility and achievements of women workers, we want to drive transformative change for equality in leadership, safe and decent working conditions, and fair and equal pay.
Building on five previous Heroines of Health Awards, Women in Global Health will host this year’s Gala during the Women Deliver Conference in Kigali, Rwanda.
In line with the conference’s focus on bodily autonomy and the rights of women and girls, Heroines of Health 2023 will recognise exceptional women leaders in health driving change for safe maternity, safe abortion and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and to mark the location of the Conference, we will focus on inspirational women health workers from Africa.
As we come together in 2023, we acknowledge the urgency to combat the backlash against women’s rights in sexual and reproductive health. By commemorating the heroines of health and their extraordinary work, we shed light on the pressing need for equitable access to these essential services.
