Gender Equal Pandemics

September 16, 2022 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. This makes UNGA a key advocacy moment for Global Health.

Women are the majority of the global health workforce (70% of all workers and 90% of frontline workers), but are only 25% of senior leaders in health resulting in decision making and planning which does not include the gender dimension of policy.Women health workers especially at the frontlines and grassroots can be exposed to situations of vulnerability and are disproportionately subjected to workplace violence and harassment from patients, colleagues and the community. Surge efforts and exposure to harm affect the mental and physical health of health workers and in particular prevents women health workers from effectively carrying out their jobs. Around half of the estimated USD 3 trillion women contribute to the health sector annually is in the form of unrecognized and unpaid work.

In the efforts to build back better from the COVID-19 pandemic and be prepared for the next one, women in health need a new social contract with fair pay, equal leadership and safe and decent working conditions. Now more than ever it’s time we advocate for a gender transformative pandemic preparedness and response plan.

For this reason WGH and AMWA propose a Twitter Chat dedicated to the topic in the form of a fireside chat between a WGH chapter member and a AMWA member, moderated by WGH staff, hosted on WGH Twitter account (over 55K followers). The Twitter Chat will be 45 minutes long and will be amplified on all social media channels. Once the main advocacy points are decided 3-5 social media graphics promoting the twitter space will be created.
