The Alliance for Gender Equality and Universal Health Coverage (UHC) has been a leading voice championing a strong gender focus to UHC since 2019, contributing to the 2019 Political Declaration of the High-level Meeting on UHC incorporating gender equality and SRHR, which was a great step forward. However, despite the commitments, political pressures continue to threaten girls’ and women’s health and rights globally. The COVID-19 pandemic has also exposed systemic challenges compounded due to lack of strong, gender-responsive health systems, and we have witnessed how women and girls are being disproportionately affected and denied their rights to health and well-being.
Now more than ever, alliances and global advocates need to come together to press decision makers to realize the commitments made in 2019 and prioritize gender in UHC. This year’s UN General Assembly marks one year away from the 2023 High Level Meeting on UHC where progress will be considered. Therefore, this event highlighted opportunities to continue momentum and action for gender equality in UHC and examine the challenges and explore gender-responsive UHC.
